What is preventative healthcare?

Preventative healthcare aids with the early detection of medical problems and help to prevent them from worsening, in addition to helping with the prevention of serious diseases. By taking out a pet health plan featuring annual check-ups and immunisations, you can drastically increase the life span of your pets. How do I join?

You can sign up to Paws Club by calling or heading into your local Paws in the City clinic. Our helpful reception team can take your details and help you sign you and your pet up for the monthly membership. You will need to make the first payment to set up your direct debit and begin receiving all of the wonderful benefits of being a Paws Club member!

What are fleas, ticks and worms – and what can they do?

Fleas, ticks and worms can be a threat to the health of both you and your pets. Not only can they cause extreme discomfort, but they can also pose serious health problems for you and your pets.

Fleas

Fleas are tiny, almost invisible, pests that can disrupt your pets’ health and lifestyle. If your pet becomes a host to fleas, they will enter a vicious cycle of biting and scratching and could even develop flea allergy dermatitis in some pets. Fleas can also be carriers of dangerous diseases, which they then pass on to your pets when they’re bitten.

Fleas can cause:

• Scratching and skin irritation
• Skin redness
• Areas of hair loss, bald or sore patches
• Spots
• Scars
• Allergic reactions
• Blood loss
• Tapeworm
• Disease
  

Fleas are easy to prevent, but troublesome to eradicate once there is an infestation. Fleas are highly contagious between pets and can also infest the soft furnishings in your home, meaning your entire household could need treatment.

Ticks

Ticks are also very small and hard to see until they attach themselves to your pet feed on their blood and become engorged.

Ticks can cause:

• Blood loss
• Disease (including Lyme Disease – which can cause serious health problems for both pets and people)
• Tick paralysis (a toxin in the tick’s saliva attacks the nervous system of the pet and causes motor paralysis)
  

Ticks are easy to prevent but had to spot. Their saliva contains anti-inflammatory and anaesthetic compounds, meaning the pet isn’t likely to notice the tick and be irritable, therefore unlikely to alert you to the issue. By the time you notice the tick has embedded, it’s probably already caused damage.

Worms

Worms can easily spread between pets and people, causing illness, disease and even death in severe cases. Animals that appear healthy can also be carriers of worms, so it is important to regularly worm your pets to ensure they are not infected.

If your pet has worms, you can usually see them in faeces, vomit or around your pets’ bottom.

Worms can cause:

• Weight loss
• Dry and coarse fur
• Increased appetite
• Weakness
• Diarrhoea
• Vomiting
• Swollen abdomen
• Disease
  

Worms are easy to prevent by ensuring your pets receive regular worming treatments.

You can also reduce the risk of your pet catching worms by:

• Disinfecting bowls regularly
• Cleaning the household regularly
• Ensure your pet doesn’t consume any faeces as this could contain larvae and eggs of the worms
• Wash your hands before and after feeding your pets

Vaccinations

By joining the Paws Club, your pet will receive 35% off their puppy or kitten vaccination course and 25% off their kennel cough vaccination.

Kennel Cough (or canine infectious tracheobronchitis) is an extremely contagious respiratory disease in dogs, which is caused by a variety of viruses and bacteria. It can spread through the air, through direct contact between dogs and on surfaces an infected dog has touched (such as bowls, collars, leads).

Kennel Cough can cause:

• Dry hacking cough
• A reduced appetite
• Low energy
• High temperature
• The Kennel Cough vaccine reduces the chance of your pet contracting Kennel Cough for 12 months, and so must be repeated every year.

Puppy/Kitten Vaccination Courses

The Puppy Vaccination Course includes the 2 vaccines that your puppy requires to help protect them from severe life-threatening infectious diseases and stops them from passing these diseases on to other dogs.

These vaccines protect against:

• Canine Distemper
• Canine Adenovirus
• Canine Parvovirus
• Leptospirosis

The annual vaccination booster will then be provided every year with your Paws Club membership to help your dog maintain protection against the diseases.

Kittens also require 2 vaccinations, which are both included in the Kitten Vaccination Course.

These vaccinations help to protect your kitten against:

• Cat flu (feline herpes virus and feline calicivirus)
• Feline infectious enteritis
• Feline leukaemia virus

The annual booster will then be provided every year throughout your Paws Club membership.
